About Me
Hey Friends, I just want to give you a bit of background information on me, how I learned to play the piano, and why I started Play Piano Now. I started the site because I’ve always loved music, but had no childhood music training. When I joined a choir in high school it took me almost three years to learn to read music. I want to be able to share some of that knowledge so that other adults interested in learning to play the piano won’t have to waste their time like I did.
I’m currently a graduate student (in a scientific field) at Arizona, so music is strictly a passion for me. I also sing in the Phoenix Symphony Chorus. I have very little spare time between research and music, but when I can get a free day, I enjoy golfing, snowboarding, and bicycling. I love all types of music, especially some of the new mixing being done in Europe and South America.
Although I currently only perform classical music, there’s really nothing except lack of free time that keeps me from performing more. These skills are universal. This year, I really look forward to playing (or singing and playing) some of my favorite Christmas carols. Hopefully I’ll get some decent recordings that I’ll be able to post.
Anyway, I decided to learn to play keyboard because there was so much music that I loved to listen to, and I wanted to get a deeper connection with the piano music. Music is a unique art because every time it’s performed, the performer is collaborating with the composer directly. Imagine if Michaelangelo gave you written instructions on how to paint the Sistine Chapel. That is what it’s like every time I sit down at the keyboard with Brahms.
